Understand Why and How to use LEAN

This Study Tour will provide you with a deep understanding of how to make the best use of Lean. This is a unique opportunity to visit Japan, Toyota, and some of their suppliers to train in Lean through seminars, Gemba visits, and participating in practical training at Toyota’s own training facility. The objective is to dig deep into the WHAT, WHY and HOW of Lean Thinking. What are the elements needed to run a successful Lean system? Day 1: Departure Europe

We depart from Europe and fly to Nagoya, Japan.

Day 2: Arrival and Tour Opening

We arrive in the morning in Nagoya and we will take the opportunity to relax and have lunch at the Toyota Commemorative Museum of Industry and Technology. In the museum we will follow the Japanese Industrial history from looms to robotics. After the visit we will travel to Kakamigahara, where we will stay until Friday. The day will end with a group dinner and an

overview of the week.

Day 3: Classroom Training

The first day of training provides a full day introduction to the Toyota Production System provided by a Toyota sensei who will also be your host for the week. Your Japanese Senior manager will lead us through Toyota Production System and the components of Toyota Way theory. This session will prepare the group for the study visits, the practical sessions and other workshops. A group dinner will follow.

Day 4: Toyota Plant Tour and more Training

We will visit a plant where we will see first-hand the theory in application. We will also have time for Q&A and reflections. We will end the day with a workshop on Standardized Work followed by a group dinner.

Day 5: Hands on Workshop & Site Visit

The fifth day will increase your knowledge of the Toyota Way from a practical perspective. For example, if we are looking at Kanban, the group will take part in a Kanban Role Play at the training center. We will also visit another plant for a Study Visit. Group dinner will follow.

Day 6: Study Visit and further Training

The sixth day will start on a Study Visit followed by activities in the Training Center where we will participate in a Kaizen Workshop in

Productivity. Followed by our group dinner.

Day 7: Toyota Motors in Toyota City

The final day in Kakamigahara ends with a study visit to Toyota Motors or another approved site. We will then hold a workshop to consider your reflections and answer any questions you may have of your Sensei before we board the bullet train that will take us to Tokyo. We will have a group dinner on the train and you will have a free evening in Tokyo.

Day 8: Sightseeing Day in Tokyo

You will end the tour with a Free day in Tokyo where we will support you with travel advice and sightseeing recommendations. This will be followed up by a team farewell dinner.

Siemens Magnet Technology

SIEMENS MAGNET TECHNOLOGY is the worlds leading designer and manufacturer of superconducting magnetic resonance imaging magnets for medical applications. The companys aim is to deliver quality products to customers.

Around 95% of the magnets produced at Eynsham are exported and the business has several Queens Awards for export success.More than 30% of the MRI scanners installed in hospitals worldwide have at their heart a superconducting magnet manufactured by Siemens Magnet Technology.

Some years ago, Siemens Magnet Technology introduced some significant changes to the manufacturing operation at Eynsham. But that was just the start, and in 2006 they embarked on another ambitious programme to improve the processes and workflows, moving towards a single piece flow and pull systems.

Visitors will discover how the introduction of 5S and Kanban has improved the workflow and been implemented in stages; how the employees have become involved and now take responsibility for various aspects of the new ways of working; and how health and safety practices have been improved and become proactive rather than simple statistical recording. Productivity has improved enormously, and throughout the continuous improvement process good communication, strong leadership and quality of product have been vital to success.

From around 200 individual suppliers, Siemens Magnet Technology now use about twenty. They will share with visitors how they have negotiated with their suppliers to reduce cost and stock levels and introduced other improvements.

New Holland

New Holland are a leading manufacturer of tractors for the Agricultural sector. Part of the Case New Holland Group (a division of Fiat) they have been manufacturing in Basildon for over fifty years. They are one of the few World Class Manufacturing (WCM) sites in the UK and have won a raft of industry best factory awards.

The site employs over 800 people and exports around 90% of the tractors it manufactures to over 120 countries worldwide. New Holland believe that manufacturing excellence has been achieved through a concerted plant-wide effort to put continuous improvement at the forefront of everything they do. To maximise productivity and ensure the operation is as lean as possible, each process is measured, monitored and quality tested. This desire to adapt and maximize the productivity of the plant has manifested itself in a deep attention to detail. Over the past five years they have achieved over £15 million worth of savings through noise reduction, waste reduction, cleanliness and efficiency and they have an ambition to make the site ear protector free.

Being part of a global company they work closely with plants all over the world, sharing ideas and innovation, maximising training and driving improvements at a global level. This commitment to world class manufacturing and continuous improvement has ensured an engaged and productive team and a site that has been recognised as one of the best in the country, if not the world.

With a focus on the environment, New Holland have radically improved the sustainability and environmental impact of the plant, they have also focused on improvements to their product to reduce emissions and improve energy utilisation.

New Holland is also influential in its devotion to improving Basildon and the surrounding area. They have placed a huge emphasis on apprenticeships and have an ongoing partnership with the Pioneer School, an educational facility for children suffering from learning disabilities.
